SHOPPING: CHEAP WINE ALERT

Tesco’s Maison Maurel Vedeau is a winner.

Describing itself as fine wine of Languedoc, the Maurel Vedeau on offer for £4.49 at Tesco is in reality a Vin de Pays D’Oc, as the region has no AOC accreditation anyway. But don’t let this put you off.

At 13% and a young 2009, this lovely red drinks more like a Rhone wine. The makers say it could stand two years in the bottle, but delayed gratification has never been my thing. However, their advice – that it goes well with beef – is spot on.

It’s not a classic, but at £4.49 it’s a steal given that in most places you’d pay nine quid for it. And it’s easy to spot,as it has the anti-theft blue security widget on the neck. At first I thought this might be a clever marketing ploy, but I was wrong. It’s a very nice drop.
