Why Cameron backed away from a toxic Jeremy Hunt at Culture

Shocking series of scandals surrounding the Groucho Club.

Two years ago, during the 2009-10 period, David Cameron took a keen interest in a Tory taskforce invited to produce a special report, UK Tourism in a Competitive World.

Part of his motivation for doing so was probably that the Conservative Leader always has a nose for big money. And John Henry James Lewis, Chairman of the infamous Groucho Club in London’s Dean Street, has for some years been the major bankroller of former Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt MP.

Mr Hunt is now the new Secretary of State for Health. He will be bringing a great deal of baggage with him for his stay in hospital.

Misleadingly, our Jeremy refers to Lewis in his interests submission as ‘Mr John Lewis of Dorset’. It is misleading both by geography and understatement: Lewis is a multimillionaire director of some 78 companies…he is based largely in London, has an an entry in Debretts, and is widely known in media circles. During 2009, Jeremy Hunt declared in his interests a meal at the Groucho Club….at which Mr Lewis coughed for the bill, a trifling £1430.

John  Henry James Lewis has a variety of media interests. He is also the man who bankrolled Hunt’s ‘fact-finding’ visit to New York in 2009 as Shadow Culture Minister to the tune of £4,000. Hunt’s visit there lists four media companies he visited. Three of them are owned by Newscorp. There are over 45,000 media concerns listed in New York. When asked by Leveson if he had spoken to James Murdoch about the BSkyB takeover, Mr Hunt replied that he had not “to the best of my recollection”. Should a man whose memory span doesn’t stretch to three years on such a central topic be a legislator and Cabinet minister? Well, today Dodger Dave decided.

But the truth is that Cameron has dumped Hunt from Culture because he has more than enough toxic isotopes in that area as it is. And be in no doubt, JHJ Lewis’s potential for toxicity is outstanding.

During the last two years, a battery of allegations has been thrown at the Groucho Club in general and its management in particular. In trying to sue just one of the accusers, Mr Lewis lost a libel case against one brave litigant who sued the club under the data protection act. The Groucho was awarded an insulting £225 costs after shelling out a legal cost estimated to be in the region of £2.5m. The owners are now trying very hard to sell their tarnished asset. But the grubby tarnish goes well beyond just one case.

It involves secret surveillance of Groucho members. The use of the Groucho’s website by paedophiles. Consumption and supply of cocaine. Another massive Met Police cover-up followed by an IPCC whitewash. Gifts to Mr Hunt from other members of the Lewis family. And a network of wealthy liars scheming to ensure that their various plots would remain uncovered.

Having presented these events in more detail to a senior Conservative source yesterday, I was informed, “Jeremy has already been told unofficially that he isn’t keeping Culture. I think it is felt by some now that it’s a post too close to the PM. This sort of stuff is exactly what they mean.”

Jeremy Hunt, is being bankrolled by the very same JHJ Lewis who formulated Tory policy on British tourism. Hunt is the Minister who was centrally involved in the Olympics…and was photographed by ITN personally seeing Newscorp owner Rupert Murdoch off as he left the Olympic Park in his limo.

Rupert Murdoch had been the personal guest at the Games of the Conservative London Mayor, Boris Johnson. The man reputed to be next in line for Cameron’s job issued a public two-fingers to all those 6,000 British citizens known so far to have been phone-hacked illegally by the journalists Murdoch employs. He is the same man who said, at the first breaking of Hackgate, “This is all a load of leftwing poppycock invented by those who wish to destroy Mr Murdoch”. To this day he has never apologised to Murdoch’s innocent victims for this inaccurate, slanderous, idiotic and totally inaccurate slur against a free press, and those victimised by the hypocrite Murdoch who claims to be a defender of press freedom….a freedom he exemplifies by hiding the content of his newspapers from the internet.

You would have to be roughly at the IQ of a tin of whitewash not to see a clearly discernible pattern in all these connections in the upper echelons of the Conservative Party, the British media scene, and the culture it has produced.

Over the next few days, The Slog will be running a series of exposés to put more flesh on the bones of this enormous but hitherto silent skeleton in the Tory Party’s cupboard. You have to fight for room in the Tory skeleton-cupboard. The aim for the rest of this week is to try and make more room in there.

This is what I tweeted half an hour ago: ‘#Reshuffle I wouldn’t put it past Cameron to give Hunt health. Newscorp Sky dish 4 every bed. Free hacked phone 4 every patient.’

The Slog beats the pack again. The rest of the week I shall mainly be beating the new Health Minister round the head.

Stay tuned.

  1. I’d have shuffled him out of a 6th floor window given half a chance.

Oh well, maybe he’ll contract Ebola whilst visiting a hospital.

  2. ‘The rest of the week I shall mainly be beating the new Health Minister round the head.’
Yes, sadly though only metaphorically, physically would be much more enjoyable.

  3. The worst of it, John, is that removing Hunt to health will provide no further spooneristic opportunities for our friends on the Today programme. Maybe that is the real reason behind the shufffle?

  4. Well that’s it for me! I’m a 53 year old, and have voted for the conservative party on every occasion I have been able to. Cameron, by not taking the opportunity to get rid of this arrogant scumbag has made it a cast iron certainty that I will not vote for them again. In the hands of these incompetent men I honestly now believe that this country of ours is headed for disaster. Good luck with exposing this piece of filth further John, I will keep and eye peeled for your revelations, I’m sure they will make interesting reading.

  5. I followed the #reshuffle hashtag on Twitter to be met by a Tsunami of *unt hatred. Brilliant!
Is he really a documented advocate of homeopathy? Sweet!
This could be a crafty move on Camerloon’s part.
Also thinking along with everyone else, “What’s the *unt got on Cameron?”

  6. Whatever the shortcomings of the NHS, it seemed relatively free from the mycelium of poisonous fungi which now pervades the rest of government and what we like to call society. Not for much longer it would appear.

This is really too much. Go JW!

  7. I’m with you, but it surely isn’t possible for a Prime Minister to do something as ‘up yours’ as this, and get away with it. I would expect serious repercussions within a twelve month.

  8. Thank the heavens that you’re around JW.. Jeremy Hunt needs to be hounded, cross examined and scrutinised until he is no longer in a position to destroy the lives of the poor unfortunates who put their faith in their government.

I can’t really put into words how sick this news makes me..

  9. The Groucho Club is full of ad men. In fact it was founded by ad men. Some of them were probably known to you John. Kiddy fiddlers and coke snorters every one of them, no doubt. But perhaps your antipathy towards the club is because you were rejected for membership…Yes? No?

And the use of cocaine was rife in your industry, particularly back in your 80’s heyday. So your high moral tone is even more comic than usual.

  10. “You have to fight for room in the Tory skeleton-cupboard”

I had to laugh at that – even though it’s true and I am (we are) getting f*cked by these people everyday.

Just waking-up and working out which way is up is a challenge in itself these days.

    God help the NHS.

  11. For those interested in the background to the pedophilia scandal at the Groucho club…

Please note how the evidence was being ‘deleted’, even after the Police and Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre had been told.

Strangely enough, the Police took no action, and the man who reported it Filmaker Tyrone Murphy, was never interviewed by them…

Which begs the question of why?

I suspect there is something more to this than meets the eye (allegedly)…

  13. I expect Hunt is Murdoch’s latest proxy in government decision making, and that it’s Murdoch, not Hunt, who has a firm hold on Cameron’s spherical objects. If you were a megalomaniac with as much power as the Digger has, wouldn’t you want the transitory holders of political power to be subservient to you?

  14. With his vast experience of Culture and Media he will go down a storm in the NHS. After all. they have an awful lot of media and culture in the NHS labs – and their anthem is:
“Show me a motion tra la la la lah…….

  15. Rollo
On such an important subject, what a pathetically vindicative comment thread.
I have however cracked the code of your name, which is obviously an anagram.
Your real name is So, Oi’m a troll.
Close the door on your way out, please. People are trying to think here.

  16. Sorry, just couldn’t resist this opportunity ….
“I don’t care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members.” (need I cite …. Groucho Marx)

  17. And talking of Health V Culture….
WTF is going to happen to the NHS with a complete *unt in charge of the ongoing reforms? A *unt who has so far completely screwed his first Hulture portfolio. A *unt who is in hock to vile nasties like the very Dirty Digger and the John Lewis Smarmoship. A *unt who lies to your face, to Parliament, to Police and – of course – the media.
Doesn’t this move indicate a reversal of Lansley’s top down reform of the NHS, the sort of reform the Tories said in their manifesto they would never EVER any longer tolerate? But isn’t it too late – haven’t we got too far through reform to pull out? There’ll be HUGE damage either way – proceed or withdraw? A good question for an *unt when we are ALL being shafted!!
The message is reform NOT privatisation. But I’d bet my last penny *unt is more up for a G4S style outsourced NHS than reformation.
    We’re all doomed, John.
    Aren’t we?
Oh if only Dave were up for re-election and not O’Balmy.

  18. “It involves secret surveillance of Groucho members. The use of the Groucho’s website by paedophiles. Consumption and supply of cocaine. Another massive Met Police cover-up followed by an IPCC whitewash. Gifts to Mr Hunt from other members of the Lewis family. And a network of wealthy liars scheming to ensure that their various plots would remain uncovered.”

These are grand and serious claims, and arguably the more interesting part of this entry, yet nothing is given to substantiate them. Can we expect chapter and verse? Surveillance, paedophilia, flogging cocaine, a police cover-up and ‘liars’? Yet we swiftly move on to more nebulous stuff. Why?

  19. Fair chance. The NHS is proving beyond most ministers capabilities.

The high profile work (developing NHS centres of excellence overseas) are probably one of the attractions for him and all those free flights to Dubai etc.

  20. Maybe Brave Dave predicts that the whole NHS top down reorganisation is going to go horribly wrong and that Mr Hunt is to go down with the sinking ship, hopefully never to be seen again..

  21. @duncanmca “The message is reform NOT privatisation. But I’d bet my last penny *unt is more up for a G4S style outsourced NHS than reformation”.

  22. The number of Chinese nurses within the NHS should at least raise eyebrows,Chinese from mainland China who openly talk of going home and working for the NHS in China.

  23. Max,

‘The Groucho Club Forum’ is not the same thing as the ‘Groucho Club’

I agree with Patrick that that was by far the most revealing part of this post.

I hope JW has his facts right.

  24. John, what an outstanding day for the Slog. Things here in Greece seem positively benign in comparison. Keep up the good work, I can’t wait for “tomorrow’s exciting episode”

  25. Wikipedia gives Hunt’s pre-MP career as follows:
After university Hunt worked for a short period of time as a management consultant, and then decided to pursue life as an English language teacher in Japan.
On his return to Britain he tried his hand at a number of different entrepreneurial business ventures, including a failed attempt to export marmalade to Japan. Hunt joined Profile PR, a public relations agency specialising in IT which he co-founded with Mike Elms, a childhood friend. … (later) … Together they founded a company now known as Hotcourses, a major client of whose is the British Council. Hotcourses has subsequently provided financial support to Hunt’s parliamentary office.
I looked in vain to see how this experience qualifies Hunt to head up the NHS. Failed marmalade exporter, FFS.

  26. Wonder how long it will be before James Naughtie announces that he has “Jeremy *unt, the Wealth Secretary” in the studio .. ?

  27. It takes a while to distill “the nebulous stuff” breaking it into it’s more volatile and potent relationships and agendas.

    My head [s]hunts[/s] hurts.

  28. “What’s the hunt got on Cameron?”
Lot’s. And not just the marching powder either. Once you figure it out it’s child’s play. Hope John digs deep…

  29. “Perhaps he has been deliberately promoted beyond his capability in a very high profile role..”

If you subscribe, like I do, to the theory that they are all promoted to their level of incompetence anyway, this would seem like overkill.

  30. I would like to clarify the situation in relation to the Groucho Club’s website and the child pornography network.

The Groucho Club is owned by Graphite Capital, a billion pound corporation led By Mr Rod Richards., Mr John H J Lewis is the Chairman of the club and Mr Matt Hobbs is the Managing director.

The Groucho web site forum is indeed owned and operated by the Groucho Club, it is the Groucho Club own members forum, not a separate website owned by anyone else. The child porn ring was operating on the member’s forum for almost a year unhindered and was never reported.

When the network of child pornographers was discovered, it was reported many times over many months. In addition when it was discovered later that the evidence in the form of cached pages on Google were disappearing many more reports were made to the Police. The police did nothing, I then contacted many politicians to get an enquiry going, when politician queried the police’s failure to conduct an investigation, thepolice then issued a false report questioning my own credibility and absolving all concerned.

I made a report to the IPCC, the same officer who created the false report was tasked to investigate himself, his investigation absolved all concerned of any wrong doing, again I appealed this to the IPCC and another DCI was tasked from the same department to investigate his own department. Again, this officer absolved everyone. Once again, I appealed to the IPCC and they reviewed the case, another Inspector looked at the case and her report was a series of ifs buts and maybes but it was all a big misunderstanding. Almost every single issue was explained away. However I have evidence that totally contradicted everything in this final report.

The final conclusion of the IPCC was that although DCI Graham Grant, the DCI who created the false report did include inaccuracies in his report, he is on leave pending retirement so the IPCC are not recommending any action against the officer.

Currently working on finishing the book

    Tyrone D Murphy

  31. Just taken a brief look, and just a brief look is all that’s needed to establish there is nothing linking the Groucho Club itself with the paedophilia, to say nothing of cocaine pushing, spying on members, a police cover-up and ‘liars’. I do hope Mr Ward knows what he’s doing by mentioning these things. If, as he seems to believe, he is an irritant the Establishment on several continents would dearly like to silence, he might just have handed them a loaded revolver.

  32. PS It wasn’t bein gay and buggering young men which did for Oscar Wilde, it was that he got up too many noses of too many people who liked to be taken seriously. People will put up with almost anything except being laughed at and being made to look foolish, which is what Wilde did.

  34. O/T.The 25th anniversary of 19 October,1987,falls this year on a Friday, when , last time round, markets were shut, due to a storm. The market ‘adjustment’ took place on a Monday in 1987.There is enough good info on ZH to tell you that SPAIN IS BROKE,so the fudge on 12 September is not going to assuage the markets.Who cares who is nominally in charge of Europe’s largest employer?

  35. I don’t think that getting him out of the ‘culture’ job and sticking him in ‘health’ is in any way shape or form a demotion or cameron distancing himself from a toxic minister

  36. The entie economic history of the world can be described as a search for new pools of wealth.

The crooked financiers who run just about everything these days simply look follow that same prescription – look for the biggest rivers of gold and then tap into them and divert them.

In Australia, this process just gave us an “excess profits tax” (call it what you want) on the big miners and the privatisation of the telephone network(now in process of partial reverse thanks to the need for a truly national fibre broadband system – which Rupert Murdoch is doing everything in his power to either sabotage or gain control of). In America, it will be the privatisation of both Social Security and the USPS.

…And in Britain? Question: “Where is there a large pool of expenditure?” Answer: The NHS! Question: Can we rape it? Answer: Yes we can!! We can privatize, outsource and consult it to death.

And Mr. Hunt and Mr. Murdoch and Mr. Cameron? Cameron wants Hunt inside the tent pissing outwards not Vice versa. I would suspect Murdoch will be in a position to both “introduce” healthcare players to Mr. Hunt and support Mr. Hunts “reforms” to the NHS in his media assets. Mr. Hunt? Well what an opportunity for power and influence with the owners of the worlds drug and equipment industry hanging on his words, not to mention every potential “service provider” in the known universe.

  37. The Groucho Club members section was once incredibly easy to access. Just by putting a member’s surname and year of birth got you in – mainly because Media folk are often so harebrained, it’d be easy for them to remember. Seemed like a good idea for the webmaster. Less so is how its database grew to 40 odd thousand users – clearly a matter of the webmaster neglecting it, or there was a redundant forum that hadn’t been closed down and had been hi-jacked by unsavouries. Bear in mind there are only about five thousand members past and present.

PS. The Snooker Room was the Peruvian procurement office.

  38. Christ, I thought it was a joke at first. I cannot believe Cameron has promoted that grubby little Murdoch lickspittle. What on earth is the man thinking?

And when I read about the homophobic ‘equalities’ Minister I nearly fell off my chair.

I wonder which of these appointments is going to bite Cameron on the arse first…

  39. @Toxic
    Legionnaire’s Disease
    …shall I stop now?
There is more sh1t in the NHS than a sewer in Rangoon! Think about it and please don’t blame Macaroon for it.

  40. @WAD Legionellosis is hardly restricted to the NHS. Nor are nosocomial infections. The NHS is already being asset stripped and debt-ridden thanks to the internal market and PFIs, but as far as I know it isnt a hotbed of fraud, mischarging or other corrupt practices. Yet.

  41. Perhaps, with a new and dodgy character in charge, the mainstream media will spend some time to actually report what is in this NHS ‘reform’.
The only thing I know for certain, is that the private sector expects to make millions out of it. Other than that, I don’t have a scoobie doo. I suspect I am one of only 64.9 million in this state of grace.
