Nurse Saldhana suicide: friends and relatives dispute official version of her death, husband ‘furious’ at media coverage.

Suggestions that Jacintha’s husband doesn’t accept prank led to her suicide

Why are these two Aussie hoaxers being scapegoated?

In a sensational development overnight in the case of Royal nurse Jacintha Saldanha, her husband Benedict Barboza has been described by family members as ‘furious’ about the media coverage in relation to his late wife. Former colleagues with whom she worked in Mumbai insist that she would have never have committed suicide. The opinion is shared by her former classmates, and also her family. Yet in Australia, there are calls for the two pranksters to face jail.

Friends, colleagues and managers who knew her during her college days at the Father Muller’s School of Nursing in Mangalore describe today her as bold, smart and “a very hardworking girl”. This we knew already, but the almost 100% dismissal of her death as suicide resulting from one prank call alone outside the UK is marked….and is in stark contrast to the media coverage in Britain.

“She was not the type who would chicken out of difficult situations,” says former colleague Stella M, “Never had we imagined that she could take away her own life. She was not the type of person who would commit suicide.”

“We are all shattered. I have worked with her and was her junior in college,” says an Abu Dhabi-based nurse currently working in a government hospital there, “She was a very practical person, very clever and never weak hearted. That is why her suicide is very suspicious. Friends of ours who know her grandmother in India are being told that she had never discussed anything about the hoax call in her last phone call just days before she died,” the nurse added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Reliable reports in the Mumbai and Indian mainstream media are appearing that suggest Jacintha Saldhana’s family members in Karnataka suspect “foul play” and want an independent inquiry into the episode. Close family friend Ivan D’Souza concurred with The Slog view posted yesterday when he told IANS news that “the family is anxiously waiting for the postmortem report and the outcome of the inquest by the Scotland Yard, because they suspect foul play in her tragic death, as she was a strong woman and would not have resorted to suicide”.

Mr D’Souza, who lives at Shirva, about 60 km from Mangalore, met Barboza’s family members at Shirva along with their former local MP Vinay Kumar Sorake. Sources close to Sorake, I understand, have said that they “greatly suspect” the speculation about suicide.

The UK media set has repeated several times that Mrs Saldhana was found hanged and left a suicide note for her family. But a source writing to The Slog suggests that it wasn’t a suicide note. A person claiming to be a close family friend emailed The Slog following yesterday’s posting, to allege that Mr Barboza and his wife regarded the prank incident as “very minor”, and to disagree with threaders suggesting that a form of cultural pride had led to her suicide. The imputation was that Barboza is furious at the assumption by both hospital and media that the prank alone led to suicide.  I also gather that he is not angry at the two Australian DJs now thrust into the centre of the scandal.

This is turn seems to fit the Guardian version of events as depicted there last Saturday. The paper described an interview with the dead woman’s mother-in-law Carmine Barboza, who said that neither Saldanha nor her husband, Benedict Barboza, had talked of the hoax phone call or given any clue that she had been under any pressure or strain.

“Benedict used to call every day but neither he nor Jacintha said anything about what had happened. Everything seemed normal,” she told the Guardian. Significantly absent from Keith Vaz’s statement after meeting the family at the House of Commons were (a) any absolution of the hospital’s role in Jacintha’s death and (b) any criticism of the two Disc Jockeys who made the prank call.

In many ways, the spotlight now turns on Saldhana’s widower Benedict Barboza, the contents of the note, and suspicions about events after the prank call. But the Daily Star reports this morning that the DJs Michael Christian and Mel Greig could face up to five years in jail. ‘Bosses at the radio station whose prank call led to a nurse at Princess Kate’s hospital killing herself could be jailed,’ led the page one piece, ‘Lawyers in Australia said managers could be prosecuted because they did not get the hospital’s permission to air the recorded conversation. They face a fine of up to £30,000 or even five years in prison if convicted.’

One wonders a little bit if some of those involved in this case have been reading the advice of Aussie-loving expat Lord McAlpine about how to manipulate and distract the media. I’m becoming increasingly suspicious at the way these two Aussies are being turned into global patsies here. I must also say that, when this all comes out of the wash, if I were Christian and Greig, I’d chuck a gigantic law suit The Star’s way for that brazen ‘led to a nurse at Princess Kate’s hospital killing herself’ libel in the paragraph above.

Earlier at The Slog: How did five Greek politicians wind up with 58 properties between them?

  1. I see Keith Vaz is involved.

Remember what the adverts say – “Vaz, whitewashes whiter than white”.

Either that, or he seeking attention again. Or both.

    • …as the result of passing through a prank call.
If you’re happy with that explanation, then this blog is
      probably not for you.

    • People do strange things when under stress – David Kelly for example, simply walked into the woods and took an overdose because he was embarassed that his name had been leaked to the press.

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain”

    • Were you in the press tent at the Diane inquest? I remember hearing of similar pre-formulated sounds coming from a leading correspondent from one well-known rag, à la ‘oh, for the love of Christ, it was just an accident, so let’s get on with it.’

So what happened to having an open mind? Ultimately, the verdict in the Diana inquest was one of ‘unlawful killing’. And it was not the paparazzi as widely and falseley reported in the press! And it was definitely NOT an accident!

  2. So what are the allegations now: She was – for want of a better word – ‘whacked’ by the security services on orders from above, because she brought embarassement upon the heads of our sovereigns? For me, that, as an allegation, would be going too far…

  3. Good follow up.
    Murkier and murkier.
Unbelievable that the confusion with a different Jacintha Saldanha caused that lady to report to the police in India that a photograph from her Facebook was used in the Press to identify the deceased Jacintha.

The Deccan Chronicle then used the well known photograph of the deceased Jacintha under the headline, “Thank you, I’m okay says this Jacintha” referring to the misidentified lady, causing distress to her family and friends.

Meanwhile, Leveson’s propinquity to the Aussie patsies is well beyond his baliwick.
Further, PIE legal lass Harman wants to ensure that the Bloggers “get it in the neck.” Some neck! Some Brass!

  4. I’d be astonished if the hospital management hadn’t given her and the other nurse a colossal 6 star bollocking. But foul play? That is really stretching it.

  5. I agree it is utterly baffling why a mother of two teenage children, happily married, should kill herself having fallen foul of an amusing prank.None of this would have happened if the House of Windsor did not exist,as the token Head of State,in a country where hereditary titles were abolished many years back, except for one family.

  6. My random theory. Kate’s BMI is reported at 14. Being that underweight stops ovulation. Maybe she knew something about IVF/Donor eggs etc? Conspiracy like – but if she was bumped off, seems like a reasonable line of enquiry.

  7. Scarlet, I’m sure Kate’s delighted that we all now know her BMI. Just looking at the poor woman (shades of her MIL) might suggest it to be low. Nevertheless she is, like her MIL, stronger than she appears and apparently defying medical statistics. Good for her!

  9. Well, it has been an amazing couple of weeks in the media. I think it just shows how our society has become soft and self indulgent. Such a shame after the magnificent Olympics did this country proud.

The media frenzy and witch hunts of the last few weeks show the amazing stupidity of the people being swept along with it. I think all those people who supported the ludicrous persecution of Twitter users and then went along with the ridiculous campaign against a couple of Australian DJs should be ashamed of themselves. Either that or they need to stop taking the stupid pills.

I think we will look back on these last few weeks and wonder what the hell happened here.

I see talk of Keith Vaz – I won’t even go there!

  10. The belated reporting of a “suicide note” is a bit like Mohammed Atta’s passport being found intact after the towers “burnt down” – convenient or what?

I doubt that anyone will know the truth. The lizard families have been manipulating the masses for centuries.

Definitely shades of Rosemary’s baby, perhaps a human sacrifice was required, does this link in with the body found at Sandringham, another satanic rite no doubt.

  11. Bloody Hell, the poor woman, worked at a prestigious hospital in London, then found that NOT ONLY HER NAME, BUT HER VOICE , WAS NOT ONLY RECORDED, BUT THEN TRANSMITTED, THE FOLLOWING DAY!! ON AUSSIE RADIO….WHAT A COUP FOR THE RADIO STATION!! NOT!!!!!

THEN, ON THE ORDERS OF THE RADIO STATION, TRANSMITTED , EVERY HOUR, AND SPREAD TO OTHER RADIO STATIONS…THEN ONTO YOU TUBE!!! BRILLIANT ADVERTISING FOR THE RADIO STATION, THEY THOUGHT????

THE TIMING BETWEEN THE ACTUAL PHONE CALL, AND TRANSMISSION, IS 1 DAY!!

From the initial recording of the sick, spoof, phone call , to transmission on the Radio station, was one day. Having thought that they had a “scoop”, they then authorised, not only putting it out on air, but distributing it across all of the airwaves….and worst of all….the video/audio on youtube.

    All to promote their station.

I do not have any sympathy, whatsoever, for the 2 (so called) DJ’s…

Would they do that, to a nurse answering the phone, to enquiries about one of their own family? Tape it, ridicule them, then transmit on the radio, internet youtube, to the whole world?
Would they even THINK of scamming their way past a hospital phone reception, to get through to nurses looking after one of their own family, recording it…then transmitting it “as a laugh”, to the whole world!!

Would they heck!….they should be prosecuted for manslaughter! The Radio Station fined, charged with total misconduct, total lack of responsibilty, taken off the air……..and APOLOGISE!

    THAT IS THE MINIMUM!!!

THE 2 DJ’S SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER.

THE RADIO STATION SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN.
    READ ABOVE….WHAT WAS SO FUNNY?

SHE DID NOT HAVE A MENTAL PROBLEM, HER NAME, HER VOICE, AND HER PLACE OF WORK, WAS TRANSMITTED, ALL OVER THE WORLD, AS A SO CALLED JOKE,

THE SHAME, THE HUMILIATION, FOR HER TO KNOW THIS…..AND HER FAMILY OVER IN INDIA, ALSO HAVING TO WATCH/LISTEN TO THIS PATHETIC SCAM, BEING BROADCAST WORLDWIDE!!??!

SHE HAS BEEN TOTALLY DENEGRATED AS TO WHY SHE TOOK HER OWN LIFE…..
I FOR ONE, AM IN TOTAL SUPPORT FOR HER FAMILY, AND THE FACT THAT SHE COULD NOT SEE HER WAY OUT OF THIS.
SHE WAS SO VERY PROUD , HAVING ATTAINED THAT POSITION IN SUCH A PRESTIGIOUS HOSPITAL, FOR SO MANY YEARS…..
AND TO LOSE THAT PRIDE, DUE TO 2 IDIOTS AND AN AUSSIE RADIO STATION….IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!

THESE PATHETIC ACTIONS HAVE LEFT 2 KIDS AND A HUSBAND WITHOUT A WIFE AND MUM!!

  12. My mother’s (who IS a nurse, by the way) comment: “I can’t imagine any nurse killing themselves by hanging. There are lots of easier ways, if you have the training and access to drugs we do”.

    I smell a rat.

    • Its also worth looking into suicide methods in general between males and females – ignoring all the PC bollocks that they are the same.

I’m at work, so I’m going to refrain from googling the data (the possibility of a call from HR / IT might be a bit difficult to explain), but hanging and other violent methods are statitstically uncommon ways for women to commit suicide. While applying statistics to a single case is by definition dangerous, it certainly seems worth noting – particularly as a nurse who, as mentioned above, would have had access to much easier ‘methods’.

      No conclusion, just a point.

    • This poor nurse obviously new some awkward info on the soon-to-be spawn of satin. The hoax call led to all those involved being under MI5’s ever loving eye. The nurse was subsequently overheard telling a relative / friend / husband something the Germans didn’t want made public and was suicided.

Anyone one else lovingly fear our Royal German overlords?

  14. I’ve posted elsewhere about the statistical fact that women, do not commit suicide by hanging…so it’s highly improbable… either she had major psychological problems or someone killed her….

Also, ahe coroner said ‘marks on the wrists’….not cuts, as some media later reported!
