GREECE EXCLUSIVE: Sabotaging the other Troika in Greece’s future?

Athens sources accuse ‘Coalition partners’ of plot to sabotage alliance with Israel and Cyprus

Venizelos….Fifth Columnist?

Sources close to a senior Opposition Greek politician today accused elements within Pasok of plotting to undermine the progress of the energy and exploitation deal between Athens, Tel Aviv and Nicosia.

Extract from a recent Slogpost:

‘Everything is connected. Greece is connected to Cyprus, which is connected to Turkey – and massively connected to EU debt and the Aegean, which is connected to energy and rare earths, which is connected to Israel, which is unpleasantly connected to Syria and Iran, which are connected to the American desire for Sunnis to triumph, which is connected to the fact that Saudi Arabia is overwhelmingly Sunni.’

From the Greek mainstream newspaper Katherimini today:-

‘The governments of Greece, Cyprus and Israel will begin discussions in September about the exporting of natural gas quantities to western
European countries, Cypriot Commerce and Industry Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis announced on Thursday in Nicosia.

The Cypriot official told state RIK television that he has received a positive response to his invitation to his Greek and Israeli
counterparts for a meeting next month. Sylikiotis also said the meeting will also discuss the formation of a working group to examine the creation of common infrastructures for the electricity interconnection of the three countries of the eastern
Mediterranean. Nicosia is already expecting revenues of some 300 million euros next year from the signing of contracts with the consortiums to be chosen for the new surveys for hydrocarbons in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus.’

The other Troika – the Eastern Mediterranean Energy Exploitation Troika (EMEET) is not a daft conspiracy theory, it is a fact. It is the ace is Antonis Samaras’s hand.

So this afternoon, The Slog is asking this question: why does a tendency within Pasok stand accused by senior elements within Tsyriza of plotting to undermine EMEET?

I have an open mind on why the mischief is being made and who is making it. This is the Tsyriza-connected source’s version:

“If the deal with Israel and Cyprus goes through, the EU will be weakened in its bargaining position. If it doesn’t, Antonis Samaras has no bargaining position. A Samaras failure would damage his political position in Greece massively. Those with their noses in the Belgian and German graft trough have everything to gain from retaining a close EU relationship, everything to lose from the development of this [Cyprus/Israel/Greece] thing, and much to gain from Samaras’s failure.”

The source accused Evangelos Venizelos directly. That’s a national sport now in Greece – but on the other hand, Venizelos is and has been implicated in corruption scandals over the last decade or more in Greece. As a younger MP, he personally drafted the law to make Ministers immune from graft prosecutions.

After starting this piece, another more centrist-right source in Athens – when confronted with the story – added this:

“I’ve heard similar rumours, but have nothing in the way of serious validation….I am convinced that Pasok’s top people had ulterior motives for trying to undermine the Samaras position [on further austerity cuts] though. Venizelos in particular is a two-faced sh*t. He’s made worse cuts than that in the past, but suddenly he has a conscience. Yes, I do think he’s trying to make life hard for Samaras, and yes, everyone knows he is playing on both sides between Brussels and Athens. So it is a credible story, yes.”

  1. kfc1404, you are so right. This person is a piece of shit just as Antonis Samaras is. They don’t have the qualifications to be there and stand for the people of Greece. And please be sure that not all the people in Greece are corrupt. Unfortunately there are some that have the necessary ethics not to get involved with the corruption.
These people, that are the most willing to leave this stupidity that prevails these days, pay the bride here.
They are placed in their positions – seeing where this country will eventually end – only to promote corrupt interests before the end.
And the EU in my opinion HAS to intervene with the corruption in Greece. An example is to open an office to receive documents that show that these persons that are negotiating with about the future of the poor people in the country are the most corrupt.

  2. It is wishful thinking … that there are meaningful quantities of fossil fuels in Eastern Mediterranean. The entire mess looks, walks, talks, smells like a desperate scam on the part of unscrupulous politicians looking for free investment funds (to steal).

Consider who are the promoters and their financial condition. Three flat-broke countries that are kleptocracies with nothing to lose and a credulous, energy-desperate world that believes in energy unicorns and fairies.

The only solution to the energy constrictions being felt worldwide is conservation and the elimination of all automobiles, period. What is taking place in Greece and elsewhere (particularly UK) is energy starvation, ‘conservation by other means’ and elimination of automobiles by way of system- bankruptcy. Everyone competes every day with their own cars for all the other things they need to live. How stupid can humans be?

How do you answer to your grandchildren?

Look to the same ‘shale gas’ scams in the US. Look at shale gas hype-then-failures in Eastern Europe and China. All of these things are of a piece “Gas being found near Cyprus”: is identical to Bre-X. Look it up.

Any petroleum resources found in the region this year will take ten years to bring to market..

US government doesn’t have to make extraordinary policy ‘arrangements’ with any of the governments in question. The major oil companies have the tools to deal with governments without Washington’s help. If there is oil or gas the majors will find it: Exxon-Mobil or Shell, Total or BP.

None of the European nations (except Norway and Denmark) have sufficient native supplies of fossil fuel, all must be imported in exchange for borrowed funds. This decades-long expansion of debt is why the continent is broke and for no other reason. Europe has thrown its wealth away for nothing.

What fuel supplies the Euros had access to has been exhausted for some temporary ‘growth’ that in the end has proven completely meaningless. Euros have been bettered by their medieval cousins who at least left behind pretty villages and cathedrals. What do the Yankee-wannabes have to show for their ongoing monstrous waste? Smog, potholed freeways, Tescos, gigantic money gobbling governments, continent-wide ugliness, debt and some used cars.

Good luck, suckers, you’ll need it!

    • Smog, potholed freeways, Tescos, gigantic money gobbling governments, continent-wide ugliness, debt and some used cars……

So its not all bad then?

      • Greece, Cyprus and US guilt colony/dependency Israel.

BTW, Israel exists at all only b/c of the SS St Louis public-relations fiasco and flat-out refusal of USAAF to bomb German vernichtungslagers or the rail transport networks in eastern and southern Europe in 1943 onward.

Farben’s Buna plant in Birkenau was bombed only to keep it out of the hands of the Soviets.

  5. Off topic, but François Hollande has refused to send in the army to Marseilles where a low level civil war seems to be raging between drug gangs. 17 people have been killed so far this year, with over 400 other ‘incidents’. The weapon of choice is the Kalashnikov. Local politicians have demanded that the army be sent in as the police can no longer cope, but this has now been refused.
Down there it’s “chaqu’un pour soi’. Meanwhile, François is being an important world leader in Madrid.

    • Hollande is right. Let the thugs exhaust themselves and don’t get in the middle till they are exhausted and then legalise drugs and take away the profits.

    • I always expected that SA would fall apart soon after Mendela expired. Looks like they’re getting ahead of the script.

  6. As someone wrote earlier in the week ‘you can judge a man by looking in his bank account’ …and his car I would add.Venizelos has more than 3 million euros in it and he is moving around in a big bulletproof 7 series BMW. The interesting part is the fact that this particular car was ordered and paid by the Greek State to protect the previous Finance Minister as he was considered a possible target of terrorist attack due to the extremely unpopular austerity cuts.Yeap…Venizelos was in that position then. Despite being just the third party leader now he has mysteriously kept the car and left the current Fin.Min. with a plain Nissan. No shame for the Greek political elite, just bulletproof Love.

    • You are right Tasso , when Venizelos was asked how he has all these fat bank accounts he said that his wife has been managing their investments and she has been doing it quite well , which makes you wonder why she wasn’t minister of finance instead of him .

      • “…which makes you wonder why she wasn’t minister of finance instead of him .”

        That’s a corker, well said.

      • Having known Andreas Papandreou all I can say is that Venizelos is out of the same mould. If ever a man deserved to be hanged it was Andreas and Venizelos is no different – I’ll even pay for the rope. But why do you Greeks elect scum like them ??

  7. There isn’t such a thing as “Eastern Mediterranean Energy Exploitation Troika”. There is only an Israel hardgaming Turkey as to quit anti-israelian rhetoric (and to some extent practices) and come into some form of negotiations over Middle East.
Unfortunately for Israel, Erdogan is not a tactician as they initially thought. Is a stuborn uncompromised Islamist and Israel-hater who owes much to the massive Arab capital that transformed Turkey into a peripheral power. And is honestly obliged for that. All depends on how long he will stay at office (or life). Soon after him Turkey and Israel will find a formula over their interests in the area, and the Israelian-Greek & Cypriot “troika” will start to fade.
In the long run the meaning of what is happening now in the E. Mediterranean will be analized by a future studier as a form of hard “negotiations” on how much one can hurt others interests as to win points during the inevitable negotiations in some future.
For their interests, Greece and Cyprus must not lose a second as to exploit the situation and secure their energy exploitation areas in E. Mediterranean before Israel and Turkeyl find their ways to a truce under the US blessings that are ready to pay a high price to formulate a lasting protection for Israel. Possibly to the expense of both Greek and Cypriot interests if Turkey insists on that in order to come into a new deal with Israel.

    • Ιs it all about the rhetoric? Israel is ready to station 20.000 troops in Lemassol ( first time that israeli troops will be in a foreign country) and few weeks ago israeli air force planes were playing games with turkish F-16s over the turkish occupied Cyprus that under international law is part of European Cyprus .And lets dont forget that recently at the greek island of Kastelorizo (where all the AOZ-casus belli turkish games are played) greek-american-israeli navy and air force exercises took place ago showing that the plan is to push back and exclude Turkey from the eastern mediterranean. The Turks are getting more and more impatient over it and unfortunately history has shown us that the only external policy theTurks have is that of the hatzara ( the turkish sword ) The sad thing is that when all this is happening Greece is falling into pieces.

      • It’s a game Yana, and for all the reasons you say, sooner or later Turkey will understand that cannot win it. This is what Israel and US are trying to communicate to Turkey by these actions. The time is up and both Cyprus and especially Greece must understand that, and act to secure their assets in E. Mediterranean. Like 1919-1922 when Kemal hesitated to recognize that there was not an alternate but to give up Iraq and Syria to the British and French sphears of influence only to see the Greeks outside Ankara, it’s for the Greeks an opportunity to secure this time their economic, not territorial assets, given only ones under a limited political time. After that they will be both again out of the game and every deal between the others would be at the expence of their interests.

The time is up and both Cyprus and especially Greece must understand that, and act quick to secure their assets in E. Mediterranean. Like 1919-1922 when Kemal hesitated to recognize that there was not an alternate but to give up Iraq and Syria to the British and French sphears of influence only to see the Greeks outside Ankara, it’s for the Greeks an opportunity to secure this time their economic, not territorial assets, given only once under a limited political time. After that they will be both again out of the game and every deal between the others would be once again at the expence of their interests.

      • Painter , i see it very hard for the turks to understand that cannot win .Erdogan talking at his party conference recently declare Damascus as sacred for them as Istanbul .The turks have big otoman dreams and also act with unpredictability , is part of their tactics and they ensure that they always cash on it . We have seen the turks playing up the americans at Iraq .Dont count on american foreign policies to be smarter than the turkish .I wish i am wrong .
