WHAT NEWSCORP COMPANIES GET UP TO GIVEN HALF A CHANCE, no. 17,293

Citizen Roop

The Coalition in general, and Jeremy Hunt in particular, need to wise up to exactly what sort of predator they are allowing into their tent.

In the US, a Fox News executive has been caught on tape saying he pushed the notion that Barack Obama was a socialist on air…..even though he thought the premise was “far-fetched.”

US site Media Matters has obtained audio of Bill Sammon, Fox News’ Washington managing editor, speaking¬† about ‘mischief’, before idly gossiping about what he identifies as some mischief-making of his own:

“I have to admit that I went on TV on Fox News and publicly engaged in what I guess was some rather mischievous speculation about whether Barack Obama really advocated socialism, a premise that privately I found rather far-fetched….in fact, I considered it kind of a remarkable notion that we would even be having the conversation about socialism.”

In a 2008 Broadcast, Sammon did indeed say:

“I have read Barack Obama’s books pretty carefully, and he in his own words talks about being drawn to Marxists. … Now all this stuff’s coming out about whether he’s a socialist. I don’t know why anyone is surprised by it, because if you read his own words…it’s not a huge shock.”

Previously, the Media Matters site obtained leaked emails showing Sammon asking Newscorp hacks to ‘echo GOP talking points‘ on health care reform.

None of this, of course, is going to affect Jeremy Hunt, the man who bravely defied World Opinion by clearing the way for Fox News owner and big-time Tory supporter Rupert Murdoch to take over BSkyB – and thus challenge the hated BBC. For Hunt just keeps on giving his smiley, pop-eyed opinion that Murdoch will have to hive off Sky News….and that’ll be OK then, won’t it?

So today, the Slog asks a simple question: if Channel Four was forced to hive off Jon Snow and his 4News co-conspirators, does Jeremy ‘Basil Brush’ Hunt think that anyone would have difficulty discerning Four’s socio-political bias?

And – in the style of a Murdloid – the Slog asks an even simpler question: Did Silvio Berlusconi go on his Italian Channel’s news show to proclaim his innocence on 34 charges of birth certificate tampering…..or did he do it in his own slot during prime time? (The twist in this second question is that we also have the answer: he booked himself a twenty minute non-news slot so to do).

Jeremy Hunt is an ambitious, bushy-tailed naif incapable of grasping what Pandora’s Box he is opening when it comes to the BSkyB deal. But as this site has been arguing since early December 2010, the Ten Downing Street association with this grubby business will be the undoing of Cameron at least – and possibly the whole Coalition project.

PS I wonder if any of our older readers have spotted the remarkable surname resemblance between the dramatis¬† personnae of Hackgate, and those of Watergate? Hunt? Coulson? The only difference, of course, is that Richard Nixon barely knew his Coulson-Hunt burglary team: whereas the contemporary Coulson-Hunt duo are of course inner-circle Dave’s Gang players.

  1. Now lookee here at what I recently found on ARRSE:

“Haig’s reputation was trashed by Lloyd George for his own personal reasons. Lloyd George was the sort of man who makes the inmates of Wormwood Scrubs seem reasonably honest. He was assisted by a man called Murdoch who was a low life Australian journo who had to apologise to the Aussie generals because of the lies he wrote. Murdoch did much to spread the attitude found in Australia that the diggers were badly abused by the Brits. It is Murdoch’s son who is the beacon of light, honesty and intellectual rigour that runs Fox news in the US.”

Like father, like son! What’s the betting that when Roop was conceived, the sperm that won the prize was also the baddest of the bunch?
